چکیده

Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) provides the most important blue and green pigments from the 21st century artists’ paints. This paper focuses on the blue pigments of CuPc, which are referenced in the Colour Index as PB15. The employment of PB15 as artists’ pigments since the very beginning until now is summarized through archives of artists’ color makers and current color charts. Moreover, for the first time, a review of the cases of PB15 identification encountered in the field of cultural heritage is presented. For each case reported in this study, the analytical methods that allowed identifying the blue pigment are specified. The significance and the relevance of various destructive and non-destructive methods, for this topic in particular are also discussed. Finally, the implications of PB15 in common conservation practices are outlined.

Unusual Pigments Found in a Painting by Giotto (1266-1337) Reveal Diversity of Materials Used by Medieval Artists

The work of painters from the twelfth fifteenth centuries is often discussed in the context of a short treatise on painting materials and methods written by an artist, Cennino Cennini, around 1390. His manual guides us to knowledge of how artists worked, but this very useful text tends to constrain our understanding of the potential richness and diversity of materials available to artists. Micr...

Significance of cadmium from artists’ paints to agricultural soil and the food chain

BACKGROUND An Annex XV restriction dossier for cadmium in artists' paints was submitted by an EU member state to the European Chemicals Agency ECHA. By cleaning, used brushes under the tap cadmium can enter the food chain via waste water treatment and subsequent agricultural application of the sewage sludge. It was estimated that 110 kg Cd per year is spread on agricultural land via this exposu...

Microscopy and Microanalysis Characterization Techniques used to Investigate Cultural Heritage Materials, Paintings and Pigments

Conservation involves the conservation and preservation of museum objects and historical monuments utilizing compositional and structural information obtained from modern analytical techniques. The conservation of oil paintings requires an understanding of the individual structure of each work of art. This often involves the need for 1) correct identification of the pigments used by the artist,...
